How do we define an application?

Good question! In a service-oriented architecture environment, this can be complex. Is a web-based customer portal a single application? It depends. If the customer portal provides an entry point into numerous business processes, for example, applying for a loan, opening an account, or obtaining a copy of a monthly statement, that could be considered 3 applications if the services are supported on the backend by 3 different business applications.
